Hair is something that needs nurturing, patience and a lot of effort. Particularly when it comes to Black men’s hair. Did you know that hair grows on average ½ inch per month, without you even doing anything.
So in essence, at the bare minimum, all you have to do is protect your hair from damage and breakage in order to promote growth. Building on this, adopting a consistent hair care routine will further boost your hair growth.
How to prevent hair damage
- Avoid products that contain harsh chemicals. Try looking for products that are free from sulphates and SLS, which are both known to strip the hair of it’s much needed natural oil. Our range of products for example are free from the above ingredients and have been formulated specifically for Black men.
- Keep your hair hydrated by moisturizing daily. Afro hair is especially prone to dryness. Because of it’s coily nature, naturally produced oils have a harder time reaching the ends of the hairs and struggle to maintain moisture. It is therefore important that you hydrate daily using a moisturizer or leave-in conditioner.
- Keep your hair clean to avoid product build up. You will want to wash at least once every week using a shampoo that is free from harsh chemicals
- Be sure to trim the ends. Split ends can cause damage to the hair and undermine your efforts to grow it. You will want to trim the ends every so often to keep all the strands healthy and strong
- Take care of your scalp. Massaging your scalp for 20-30 minutes a day may help encourage hair growth. If you have any damage or thinned hair from hair relaxers, hair dyes or heat damage, this can be especially helpful
- Maintain a healthy diet. At the end of the day your hair health starts from within. Make sure your diet contains lots of fruit, vegetables and protein, as this has a huge impact on your hair.
- Drink lots of water. Water is essential for good health, especially if you’re trying to improve hair growth. The cause of poor hair growth is often due to poor nutrition and the best thing you can do is get more water in your diet. The recommended daily amount is 9 glasses of water for women, and 13 glasses for men.
Follow these tips, be consistent but most of all be patient. No matter how long your hair, the important thing is making sure it is healthy first. Length without health is pointless as it will lead to breakages further down the line
