1. Genetics
The first thing to note when it comes to growing longer, stronger and healthier hair is that genetics often plays a huge part. Remember that kid in school who came into year 7 with a full beard and a voice deeper than hale the male teachers?
Well that same hormone we get a boost of during puberty regulates a number of functions in men and plays a huge part in hair growth.
It’s why some of us are able to have a clean shave and wake up the next day with o’clock stubble and the rest of us (myself included) are not so lucky and have to put in a little extra effort to see results.
Don’t be disheartened however, we just wanted to get that one out of the way. 

According to the US center for disease control hair grows on average at around 1.25cm per month with Black  hair only slightly lower at 0.95
This means that even if you weren’t blessed with the furry gene you can still expect to grow around 4- inches of hair per year if you take care of it.
Another thing to consider with genetics is your coils pattern. Men with curlier hair may take longer to visibly notice their hair growth as hair coils back on itself, reducing length. Men with wavier hair will not only see more lengh visually but they will also be able to cover any gaps in their hair and beard easier or in the earlier growth stages.

2. Massage and Moisturise Your Scalp:
Your scalp is just as, if not more important than your hair itself. What goes on within the deeper layers of your scalp greatly determines how your hair grows.
Gently, (Keyword: gently) massaging your scalp every so often will help improve blood flow to the follicles and stimulate new hair growth.
We say gently because you never want to be too abrasive with your hair as that causes your cuticles to shed, making your hair look frizzy and disheveled which also leads to more knots.
Whilst we are here, avoid being too rough when drying your hair with a towel, instead press the towel against the hair to absorb excess water or pat dry, do not vigorously rub, especially with a rough towel.

3. Reduce Breakage
Breakage is an often overlooked problem for men, you should take note though because managing this is one of the gems for maintaining a more lustrous, fuller beard and great for men even with shorter hair. 

Every time you groom your hair you are putting your hair under tiny amounts of stress, as your hair grows the tips of your hair strand that are now the oldest part of your hair have undergone the most amount of stress making it more prone to break away from the younger, newr hair that has now grown.

The best ways to reduce breakage are to condition regularly and moisturise before combing and/or brushing.
Conditioning helps smooth the hair, making the coils less likely to tangle and easier to comb through.
Moisturising before you comb helps soften the hair for grooming. You’ll always have some shedding when you comb, but pulling a comb through dry, interlinked hair is going to pull on and break your hair much more than necessary. 

4. Trim Less

Trimming your beard does not help it grow.
I repeat, trimming your beard does NOT help it to grow. The only benefit to trimming your beard are circumstances where you may want a more even look so trim down for balance or symmetry. This can sometimes create an illusion of fuller growth as the hair grows back more evenly.
Outside of that, I would recomennd leaving the beard to do its thing and to have a little patience.
If you, like most men have the odd patch in your beard the better options would be to;

  1. Allow surrounding areas to grow as this will eventually join or cover the trouble areas, you can also style with wax or pommade if needed. 
  2. Stimulate growth in the problem areas with a beard growth serum or beard roller. 

If you’re trying to grow your hair or beard, it’s also important to let your barber know not to trim them.
Your barber will naturally trim down hair to an even level to give you the sharpest finish, however this could be slowing your growth process. 

5. Hydrate

What you put into your body has a direct impact on how your hair and skin will look, do not expect movie star hair if you diet is high in carbonated drinks, processed food and cigarettes.

Just like getting a better body in the gym is 50% diet, your skin and hair are no exception. 

The first and most important step is to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

It’s like moisturising your body internally which in turn moisturises your hair as it grows from the root. Remember your body is 70% water so this step is fundamental most health authorities recommend around 2 litres of water per day.

6. Your Routine

A great system + routine is the key to any kind of sustained success in life and your hair and body is no exception. 

It’s important to note that just like going to the gym it takes time to see results but if you are consistant you will reap the fruits of your labour.
Another myth were trying to dispell is how often you should wash your hair.
We’ve seen everything from once a day to never as your hair cleans itself (It doesnt)

After reviewing a number of studies we recommend 1-2 times per week.
Your hairs natural oils are important but should be kept in balance, over washing especially with a harsh, sulphate shampoo can lead to your body over compensating by over producing oil, which leads to needing to wash more often, which leads to scalp issue. So yea, once or twice a week is fine with a natural gently cleansing shampoo like ours and condition at the same time.
